Our Reception Team are here to help you

Our Reception follow a template deigned by our GP's when booking appointments, They are restricted to what they can book into and the template has been created to make sure people are booked into the most appropriate clinician for their needs. Our reception team do not have the access rights to override any of the time locked appointments so its important correct bookings are made to maximise the number of available appointments. 

If you request an emergency appointment our reception team may require you to provide more specific details about your emergency. This is requested by the clinicians and is not the reception team prying into your personal life. The more information you can provide them with, the better equipped they will be to help you. If you wish to speak with a receptionist privately, away from the reception area, please ask to do so. All information is treated in strictest confidence

GP's have access to override the time lock appointment’s so, If a GP asks you to come back to see them in a week’s time and does not book you an appointment themselves, this means you need to book your own routine appointment.

Helping you understanding appointments


Clinicians start their consultations at 9am each morning and they finishes around 12pm each day. Then they will go on home visits and complete admin such as daily requests for medication, repeat medications, referrals, file bloods and review incoming mail from hospitals (there is more that you may expect). They will then start their afternoon clinic around 3pm which finishes at 6pm. 

Fully staffed there are up to 163 appointments with a clinician (GP/ Registrar GP/ Advanced Nurse Practitioner/ Physicians Associate) and 18 emergency Sit & Wait appointments available per day.

We break these down into the following appointment slots:

  • Internet

  • Worker

  • Advanced booking

  • Same Day

  • Emergency Sit & Wait

  • Mother and Child (6 to 8 week check)


We do this to maximise the number of appointments we can offer you on a weekly/ daily basis.

You can book appointments over the phone and in person from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday. You can book useing the internet appointments 24/7 (all of this is subject to availability)

If there are no appointments available, this does not mean that there aren’t any appointments, this means the appointments are fully booked with other patients.

How to see your doctor 

Access to a clinician varies for each patients individual reason for visiting the practice. We attempt to accommodate each individual's requests but also have to use an appointment system that suites the majority.

The options for booking to see a clinician are:

  • On the day: Calling the surgery on the day with an acute illness / calling to see a clinician regarding ongoing problems.

  • Advanced Booking: Booking for a follow up appointment / review

  • Online: These are standard appointments bookable through our website

  • Sit & Wait - For acute on the day appointments where a patient has become ill over night or on the day and the severity is not that which would require a 999 call.

Clinicians - Who can I see?

Home Visits

There is a fairly wide-held belief that patients have an automatic right to a home visit from a GP within core hours (8am to 6pm). This is not in fact the case. We will arrange a home visit for a patient whose condition, in the opinion of the doctor, warrants it.

If you request a doctor to visit you please telephone before 10.30am. We will take your telephone number and a GP will call you back and arrange the appointment with you.

Missed Appointments

If you cannot keep your appointment please inform the surgery or click here to manage online. Cancelled appointments can be offered to someone else in need of an appointment.

Please be aware: This practice has the policy of requesting NHS England to remove patients from the practice list if they fail to keep three booked appointments in a three month period.

If you require urgent medical assistance when the surgery is closed, which cannot wait until the surgery re-opens; please dial 111 and you will be connected to the NHS 111 service.

Calls to this service are free from both landlines and mobile phones, and the service is commissioned by Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group.
